Ewwwww

I'm suffering from an epidemic of stinky washcloths at my house. Fresh out of the wash, they smell sweet and clean - until the second they get wet. Ugh. I hate that smell more than I can tell you.

I threw out all but the really clean-looking ones. I bought a slew of new ones. But dang it, I guess those germs survive pure bleach and scalding water. I think the old washcloths must haze the new washcloths while bored in the drawer for days on end. I'm going to attempt throwing them ALL away and starting fresh.

Don't go to IKEA when you only have 20 minutes. And don't try searching for a small bin of washcloths in a store the size of California during that 20 minutes.

My washcloth renewal is going to have to wait for another day.

Thought: Try rinsing them extra times? Or Bac-out. If diapers get smelly upon getting wet, that is usually the best thing to do.

Sometimes detergent buildup can cause stink upon wetness. Try extra rinses, if you don't want to buy all new washcloths. Or try using less detergent on just the washcloths. Orrrrr use a water-softening agent. I even have some you could borrow. ;)

See? I'm full of unsolicited advice. hehe.

I too HATE that smell. It really is disgusting. I bought a big pack of sponges for the kitchen and I can't stand when they begin to get "that smell". I immediately want to throw it away even though I've only been using it for a week. Yuck!

I know that smell, it is the grossest thing ever! Smart to go to Ikea for more but I can see where timing wasn't in your favor. Besides the fact that they move things around in there so often you'd never find it in the same place twice. Still I miss Ikea. Good luck on clean smelling washcloths, it's an up hill battle.

Hmmm, bleach really doesn't work? When you say "pure bleach" do you mean you poured bleach from the bottle right onto the washcloth? Or do you mean you mixed bleach only with hot water? If that's true, you might actually try cold water -- I think bleach evaporates quickly in hot water. I'm not really a bleach expert, though -- just more unsolicited advice. :)

Eeewww...I hate that smell too! Now that I think about it, that probably has a lot to do with why I barely use washcloths anymore. I use make-up wipes to clean my face.
And don't even get me started on sponges! I read that putting a sponge in the microwave for a minute kills off the bacteria. Yah, but it also fills your whole house with that exact smell. Gag!! Never again.

OK, I know this was a long time ago now, but I've just been dealing with major funk in Tim's cycling clothes, and here's what I finally found that worked: VINEGAR! I read somewhere that soaking funky clothing in vinegary water for a couple hours might help, and I was amazed that it did! I'd tried Bac-Out, bleach, borax, lots of detergent, lots of rinsing, and Oxi-Clean. So, you might give it a try next time you start getting the stink!
